Amazon AWS DeepLens camera

___

Amazon has begun accepting advance orders for its AWS DeepLens camera, for delivery in April, 2018. It will sell for $249. It looks like a wireless home security camera, and that is one of the functions it could serve, but with Artificial Intelligence (AI) built in, the device offers more capabilities than its 1080p HD resolution, 4-megapixel sensor and 16-GB storage might indicate.

DeepLens uses “Deep Learning,” the catch-all term for the AI that has become increasingly prevalent in our everyday devices. Deep Learning is the technology that allows your smartphone to recognize your face and Alexa speakers to distinguish between different voices in the house. It is the technology that allows Photoshop to knock the background out of a photograph in seconds.

The camera “learns” to recognize objects, faces, voices and even activities. One function that is certainly not lost on Amazon would be the ability of a customer to show an empty bottle of shampoo to the device and automatically place the order—with Amazon.

A user could scan inventory in a warehouse with DeepLens, recognizing individual items and automatically updating a company’s order forms. In the home, it would recognize activities, such as playing guitar or brushing one’s teeth. (That must be of interest to someone) The device is also “smart” enough to recognize different animals, and could be programmed to dispense the appropriate amount of food at specified times.

The camera is tied to Amazon’s flagship cloud service, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Revenue for AWS increased 42% compared to 2016, reaching $4.58 billion and exceeding analysts’ expectations.

Some readers may recall the rogue computer, Hal, in the classic sci-fi movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The computer came “alive” and attempted to take over the mission in a cyber mutiny Perhaps this application of AI would initially be limited to scanning inventory and making sure Spot and Fluffy are fed on time.
